Teaching Dives

Dive Drill 1: Frog Dives (Focus on diving OUT)

Young swimmers tend to dive down, but we want them to dive OUT and over the water. Where the eyes go, so will the body. By eliminating all the other components of a dive and just having them jump out with their eyes up, we can start the process of making a great dive!

Dive Drill 2: Hand Slap (Throw the arms OUT)

Young swimmers tend to dive down, but we want them to dive OUT and over the water. Where the eyes and hands go, so will the body. This is step 2 to building a great dive!

Dive Drill 3: Thumbs Up Dive (Throw chest OUT)

Young swimmers tend to dive down, but we want them to dive OUT and over the water. This is a fun drill that will get some belly flops (that's ok) and challenge the kids to jump out before diving down.

Dive Drill 4: Full Dive (Focus on making a smiley face)

  • Focus on making that smiley face we talked about in Dive drill 1.
  • Focus on jumping OUT, not down.
  • Kick the leg up behind to have a smooth entry into the water.
  • Glide for a second before breaking the streamline to dolphin kick.
  • The dive ends after the breakout, not before - Practice practice practice!
